The music industry is truly a giant in the world of business. It is surprising that until recently women were excluded from executive positions at record labels and in other parts of the music industry. It is only in recent years that women were able to push themselves into the backrooms and board meetings of some of the most profitable record labels in the world.
Desiree Perez has known the entertainment world for far more time than most women in the industry. She has been an associate of Jay-Z for over two decades. Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has trust Desiree Perez to handle things such as the recruitment of new athletic talent to tours and events for musical talent.
Currently, Perez is the COO of Roc Nation, Carter’s record label. At the label, Perez’s responsibilities consist of working with talent, arranging tours and events, and making contact within the music industry. During her time at Roc Nation, Perez has had the oppurtunity to work with such musical acts as Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Beyonce, Rihanna and Jay-Z himself.
The success of Jay-Z’s newest album, “4:44”, is partially a success because of Perez. She recently made a 200 million dollar deal with Sprint that enabled subscribers of Sprints cellphone service to download “4:44” for free. A similar deal was reached with Samsung for Jay-Z’s previous work, “Magna Carta Holy Grail.” Both deals made it possible for Jay-Z to sell 1 million units before either album had even been released.
As previously mentioned, Roc Nation is not only a record label, it is also an athletic management agency. Their clients consist of legendary athletes such as Miguel Cotto and Kevin Durant. On March 1st, 2018 Roc Nation announced one of its newest talent acquisitions, Romelu Lukaku.
