Robert Ivy, CEO of the AIA, Honored for Achievements

Robert Ivy, the CEO and Executive Vice President of the American Institute of Architects, has been honored with the Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award, which is bestowed by the Mississippi Academy of Arts an Letters. The Academy recognized Ivy for his tireless work in making architecture more accessible to the general public. In receiving the award, Ivy joins the ranks of the legendary author Eudora Welty, Hollywood heavyweight Morgan Freeman, and famed historian of the Civil War Shelby Foote.

In 2011, Robert Ivy took the helm of the AIA, based on his reputation as an author, editor, and architect. According to AIA President Carl Elefante, Ivy is a “worthy ambassador” of the architectural profession. Since assuming the presidency of the AIA, Ivy has made it his mission to grow the Institute, and thanks to his efforts, the organization now enjoys its highest membership level ever. Ivy holds a degree in English from Sewanee, the University of the South, and undertook his professional architecture training at Tulane University, graduating with a master’s degree in architecture in 1976. Before architecture school, Ivy served in the US Navy. Prior to being appointed CEO of the AIA, he served as editor-in-chief of Architectural Record, the world’s most widely circulated architectural publication thanks to Robert Ivy’s visionary leadership.

In addition to his other achievements, Robert Ivy is an accomplished author. His biography of Fay Jones is now in its third edition and is considered the definitive work of its type. The volume was recognized by the Art Library Society of North America as a book of the highest standard.

Robert Ivy has had a long career in architecture, writing, and publishing, but his goals have not been met. Ivy wants to continue to expand the AIA in order to extend the influence of architecture as a profession and empower people to understand how the art of architecture touches their lives.

Golly, Fagali’i is Unexplored Samoa

The Pacific Ocean is home to Fagali’i, a tiny village located on the island of Upolu, which is part of the Samoa archipelago. The district is about 3 miles south-east of the capital city of Apia.
